Garbara was a name given to the Grotto family, descendants of Vittore, Ambrogio Grotto’s great-grandfather; in the local Veneto dialect a word meaning “harsh and dry” and related to the landscape.
The bond between the Garbara family and their vines has been passed down through the generations for over two centuries. For more than 60 years Ambrogio, nicknamed Brosio Garbara, born in 1926, has cultivated and produced his Cartizze on his small property in S. Stefano di Valdobbiadene.
He has spent more than half a century among the steep craggy rows attending to every single vine by hand and to every little detail, knowing without a doubt that a great wine is, above all, created in the vineyard.
Ambrogio’s passion, perfected year after year searching for the ideal flavour, scent and perlage.
Just a few thousand bottles a year, intended for friends and a small circle of affectionate devotees, loyal trustees of their serendipitous discovery.
“Although we have now given our product a commercial guise, and have received international recognition, we don’t want to compromise on our real dimension” comment Augusto and Mirco Grotto who now run the business. “Our choice is the same as that which our father embarked on: to continue to be small producers of an extremely select Cartizze, both from the point of view of its quality and of its commercial reach.”
